Dog Medical Insurance: 4 Things to Consider Before Making your Purchase

Richard Livitski asked:

Because there is a rapidly increasing number of dog lovers in the world, the need for dog medical insurance continues to rise.

Caring for pets can be expensive even if they don’t have any medical conditions or are just getting old. Just the basics such as a yearly exam, vaccinations and preventative flea and heartworm medication can cost a few hundred dollars a year.

With this in mind, many dog owners are opting for dog health insurance. No matter how expensive your pet’s health needs are, there is a health insurance plan that can at least help to cover a portion of the costs. But, not every pet insurance policy is right for your pet. If you are among the many dog owners who has decided pet insurance is right for you, you will definitely want to spend some time researching what type is right for you and your pet before actually purchasing a policy.

Veterinarians…

Just as human health care providers are only able to accept insurance from certain companies, the same holds true for veterinarians and insurance companies. As well, many pet insurance companies will only allow their policyholders to go to certain veterinarians. With this in mind, it is important to consider whether your veterinarian will allow your insurance to be used and whether your insurance will cover visits to that particular vet clinic. It would be a shame to find a wonderful vet that you and your dog get along with, only to find out you have to switch because of the coverage plan you purchased.

If you already have a veterinarian in mind, or are already working with one, simply call their office and ask the office manager for recommendations on quality pet insurance. From here, call the insurance company and make sure they will allow your pet to visit that office.

Reviewing Plans…

When it comes to dog medical insurance, remember that all insurance companies are not created equal, so spend time researching which one is right for you and your dog. You will want to carefully consider the type of coverage each insurance policy provides. Although some policies may be cheaper than others, this is because some pet insurance companies only offer coverage for basic services, like routine exams and medication, but will not cover major surgeries. Others will cover surgeries or major medical conditions but with a high deductible or with a huge co-pay.

It is best to decide on a veterinarian that has affordable rates first. Then determine the amount of dog medical insurance you will need for your pet. From here you should contact several insurance companies for quotes and then you can decide which is the most affordable for your pet’s needs. This may mean sitting down to review several different pet insurance policies.

Breed of Dog…

You will also want to spend some time considering the breed of dog you own before settling on pet health insurance for your dog. Some dog breeds are by nature healthier than others, but almost all dog breeds are prone to some type of injury or illness. Taking into consideration future health issues can help you to determine the price range of insurance coverage you will need.

Age and Health…

If you have a fit, young adult dog, you probably only need enough insurance to cover a yearly examination and an average deductible in case of an emergency medical situation.

Keep in mind, though, that many dog owners will assume that a new puppy does not need dog insurance because they are so young and healthy. Actually, though, puppies will receive more vaccinations in the first year of their life than at any other time, and these vaccinations can be extremely expensive.

Of course, if you have an older dog, one that is over 8 years old, they are increasingly at risk for illnesses, ailments and the need for medication. Thankfully, modern medicine has made it possible for older dogs to live longer without pain, but unfortunately this medication can be expensive. If you have an older dog that is in declining health, you may want to consider increasing the coverage on your dog medical insurance.

When Richard Livitski isn’t busy digging up information about dog medical insurance, he’s working on his dog names website http://www.dog-names-and-more.com where dog names as well as dog training, grooming, and care tips can be found.

Avoiding Cholesterol Medication Scams

February 17, 2009 by admin

Donald Urquhart asked:

What harm can they do?

Cholesterol “medication” scams consistently rate as some of the worst scams, as not only do they waste time and money, they can endanger your health even further.

If someone is taken in by one of these scams, they can fail to take the real actions that would help with high cholesterol while ingesting something that might even pose a hazard in and of itself.

Uncontrolled cholesterol can lead to blindness and many other horrible disabilities. So detecting these scams is vitally important.

Fortunately, there are a few simple guidelines that can help you avoid these scams.

First, realize that if you currently suffer from high cholesterol, you must modify your diet.

Any supplement or medication that says it works so well you can eat as much as you want of anything you want is too good to be true. In point of fact, any claim that sounds too good to be true probably is. There’s a certain amount of “marketing” that any pharmaceutical company is going to use, but detailed claims of miraculous effects should be investigated very, very carefully.

Next, can you find any objective reviews or clinical studies on either the product itself or the main ingredient?

Most medications labeled as such must undergo a rigorous, published and peer reviewed clinical testing process. These tests don’t just prove the proposed medication’s safety, but also must prove whether or not the medication actually works. Anything labelled a “supplement”, on the other hand, only has to prove that it won’t hurt you, the company does not legally have to prove efficacy. This is not to say all supplement are a waste of money, but do always check for thorough, independent reviews.

Also check for quality and quantity of negative criticism.

It’s unreasonable to expect any give product to work for everyone, but finding no positive, independent commentary regarding a particular product should be a red flag. In addition, while the occasional statement of ineffectiveness is expected, you should avoid any products with complaints about production methods, safety, bad adverse health effects, or “recycling” practices. No supplement or medication should ever be repackaged and resold if a previous customer returned it, as no one knows if the supplement was contaminated at some point along the way.

Last, never purchase anything online from a company that does not have an actual physical address, phone number, and money back guarantee.

Don’t settle for a P.O. Box, any decent pharmaceutical or nutriceutical company should have an actual brick and mortar office address. The money back guarantee is important because, as stated above, no medication works for everyone. In addition, if you currently suffer from any other health conditions or take any other medications, check the one you’re thinking of adding carefully to make sure it doesn’t interact badly.

By following these simple guidelines and applying your own common sense, you can avoid wasiting your money and endangering your health.

The Lowdown on Life Insurance Medical Exams

February 6, 2009 by admin

medical review
Amy Danise asked:

There are three main ways a new life insurance policy is priced: Underwritten policies are those where you answer questions on your personal and family medical history and undergo a medical exam arranged by the insurance company; a simplified issue life insurance policy application asks you some medical questions but does not require a medical exam; and a guaranteed issue life insurance policy requires no questions and no medical exam. If you’re healthy, or even if you have a few medical problems, you’re likely to get the best insurance value from an underwritten policy, which is priced specifically for you. Simplified issue and guaranteed issue life insurance policies set a price that assumes risk that you may not have.

Whether you’re buying term life insurance or whole life insurance, you’ll likely be asked to undergo a medical exam. These are typically performed by licensed paramedicals who are often independent contractors hired by the insurance company. They will schedule a visit to your home for the exam and bring all the necessary supplies. The life insurance company foots the bill for the exam.

Health questions

When you submit your completed application for your life insurance policy, your agent or life insurer will call a paramedical service to let them know you require an life insurance medical exam. The service will then contact you to arrange a convenient time and place. You must have the exam or your application won’t be processed.

The life insurer may still request an attending physician’s statement (APS) from your doctor, but you cannot have the life insurance medical exam done by your own physician.

In a basic exam, the paramedical will take your medical history (even though you’ve already supplied it on your application), height and weight, blood pressure, pulse, and blood and urine samples. Beyond that, tests will vary based on your age and policy amount.

For example, MetLife will order an in-home EKG for applicants age 50 and older who are applying for face amounts of at least $1 million. For applicants age 70 and older who are applying for $2 million policies and higher, MetLife forgoes the paramedical exam and requires an exam by an M.D. chosen by MetLife (not your own doctor). The doctor will ask the same medical questions as a paramedical and get your height, weight, blood pressure and pulse, plus do a brief medical exam such as listening to your heart.

Jacki Goldstein, Vice President of Life Underwriting at MetLife, emphasizes that this is not a comprehensive medical exam and does not include sensitive issues, such as a breast exam for women. Goldstein also stresses that the M.D. life insurance exam is not a substitute for good routine medical care.

When age and face amounts get higher, a treadmill test may be required. For example, MetLife requires treadmill tests for applicants who are at least 50 and applying for over $10 million in insurance or applicants 76 and older applying for $5 million or more.

If you’re applying for a low face value policy, you may not even be asked to do a paramedical exam. For example, if you’re age 40 and applying for $50,000 of life insurance, MetLife requires no specific tests or measurements. And for some cases, MetLife asks for a “simple paramed” exam, encompassing the basic measurements and blood and urine work but without the paramedical question list. Guidelines for tests will vary among life insurers.

What are They Looking For?

The life insurance company wants to know if you have any health condition that could shorten your life which in turn affects the insurer’s risk and your policy premium. When samples of blood and urine are collected, the insurer tests for HIV, cholesterol and related lipids, liver or kidney disorder, diabetes, hepatitis, prostate specific antigen (PSA) and immune disorders. The urine sample might go through routine analysis, plus screening for certain medications, cocaine and other drugs.

Results go to the life insurer’s home office for an underwriter to review. You can usually send a written request if you want a copy of the results, and some insurers will automatically send you a copy of your lab work. If there’s anything of concern about the lab results, you would need to consult your own doctor. Goldstein says, “It’s not uncommon to have abnormalities that don’t mean anything.”

A life insurance underwriter then reviews your application and the results of your medical exam. They decide your life insurance rating, which sets your premium. If there are lingering questions about your health, they may request additional information or medical tests. In the very rare event you are unknowingly quite ill chronically or terminally your application would be declined and you would have to look for a high-risk carrier or one that offers guaranteed issue life insurance.

Don’t Let Your Life Insurance Premiums Go Up In Smoke

Smokers pay higher premiums for life insurance because of their higher mortality rate. If any nicotine shows up in your results, you’ll be considered a smoker. The test also detects nicotine from a transdermal patch.

After the Life Insurance Exam Results

If your test results correlate with the classification used for your original life insurance quote, you’ll have no problem getting that rate. If a medical problem is discovered, you might be offered a life insurance policy with a higher premium.

There are two types of risk ratings: “flat” ratings, sometimes called temporary flat extras, and “table” ratings. Underwriters assess health conditions based sophisticated table to determine how to rate certain health conditions.

For instance, an underwriter might apply a flat rating for a short period of time for a person who has just had surgery. On the other hand, a person with high-blood pressure could receive a table rating, which increases premiums by a set amount for the duration of the policy, depending on your medical condition and age. If you disagree with a rating you receive, contact your agent.

Agents can find out if the rating can be revised based on supplemental medical tests to prove you qualify for a better rating.

Even if you end up declining the life insurance policy, your test results become part of your record in MIB Group’s database (formerly the Medical Information Bureau), a clearinghouse of medical information that insurers share which stores information for seven years after you apply for a life, health, disability income, long term care or critical illness insurance policy.

MIB is jointly owned by about 470 insurance companies. So, if you go shopping around for other term or whole life insurance policies, remember that your medical information is accessible to other insurers in the near future. Note that MIB’s database does not contain actual medical records but rather codes that represent medical conditions and tests, hazardous hobbies and even your bad driving record.

If you want to check your MIB file, or dispute information in it, you can obtain one free report annually at www.mib.com.

No Way, You Say?

Life insurance medical exams are really quite routine. But if you want to avoid a medical exam at all costs, you could buy a simplified issue life insurance policy, which requires only that you answer a few medical questions, or a guaranteed issue life insurance policy, which requires neither an exam nor questions.

Keep in mind, though, that if you’re in general good health, or even with a history of some health issues, you’ll likely get a much better rate by buying a life insurance policy that requires a medical exam.

Tips for a Better Life Insurance Medical Exam

Certain health conditions simply cannot be masked, but to obtain the best possible results, here are some recommendations:

-Get a good night’s rest the night before your exam. -Don’t drink for at least eight hours before the exam.

-Avoid coffee, tea or other caffeinated drinks such as soda for at least one hour prior to the exam.

-Limit salt intake and high-cholesterol food 24 hours before your exam.

-Don’t engage in strenuous physical activities 24 hours before the exam.

Benefits of an External Medical Review

January 27, 2009 by admin

medical review
Joseph Thomason asked:

Are you one of the many physicians who run your own healthcare practice? If you are, you may be wondering whether or not your service is in check with the service offered by your competitors. If that is the case, you may be interested in having your medical office reviewed. When it comes to a medical review, you will find that you have a number of different options. One of those options is an external medical review.

An external medical review is one of the most sought after types of reviews in the medical industry. One of the reasons for that is because they are unbiased. External, as you likely already know, means outside. Concerning an external medical review, an outside company or an individual person comes in to evaluate you and your medical practice. As previously stated, external medical reviews are highly sought after, especially since they have a number of benefits.

One of the many benefits to going with an external medical review, instead of an internal medical review is the accuracy. When doing an internal medical review, even one that is anonymous, there are actually many individuals who wonder just how anonymous they are. This is something that causes many to not be fully truthful on their peer reviews, as they don’t want to offend anyone that they work with or put their own jobs in jeopardy. By having your medical practice undergo an external medical review, you do not have to worry about this happening. The individual or company performing your review is more likely to give you accurate, unbiased results.

Having an external medical review done on you, your employees, and your medical practice in general will also be able to save you and all of your employees time. As it was previously mentioned, many internal reviews do not always go off as easy as external ones do. If an internal review is supposed to be anonymous, there is a good chance that not everyone would want to fill out their reviews at their traditional work stations, in fear of been seen. While this need for privacy is normal, it can disrupt your daily workday. That is why external medical reviews are almost always preferred.

The decision as to whether you want you, your employees, and your medical practice in general to undergo an external medical review or an internal medical review is your decision to make. Despite being your decision to make, you are advised to remember that external medical reviews have a number of benefits; benefits that you may want to reap. If you have yet to decide which type of medical review you would like, it is advised that you at least look into both, external and internal. First exploring all of your options, before making a decision, makes your finial decision as well informed one.

Allergy Medications Which Ones Are the Best?

January 2, 2009 by admin

medical review
Ronnie Wilson asked:

Do you suffer from allergies? If you do, you may always be on the lookout for ways to seek relief. Although there are a number of natural ways that allergy sufferers are able to treat or manage their symptoms, many turn to medicine. Whether it be prescription medications or over-the-counter medications, many find themselves wondering which ones are the best.

When it comes to determining which allergy medications are the best, there are a number of important points that must first be taken into consideration. One of those points is the type of allergies. For example, different individuals suffer from different allergies. Some suffer from pet allergies, some suffer from mold allergies, some suffer from food allergies, and so forth. Some medications are better for those with certain allergies, as more targeted treatment is provided. One of the best approaches to take is to speak with a professional healthcare provider or do the research online.

Insurance is another factor that should be taken into consideration. Many individuals like to research and compare prescription medications and over-the-counter medications for allergies. With that being said, some individuals do not have the opportunity to try both. For example, if you do not have health insurance, you may be unable to afford the cost of a healthcare visit, as well as the cost of prescription medicine. If you are one of those individuals, you are encouraged to spend most of your time focusing on over-the-counter allergy medications. The good news, however, is that many medicines that were once only available with a prescription are now available without a prescription.

As for what allergy medications are the best, you will find that it all depends, as previously stated. A great way to get started is to speak with a healthcare provider. If you have health insurance, you are advised to schedule a visit with your doctor. In addition to getting a prescription, your doctor may be able to help you with other ways to manage or treat your allergy symptoms. Chances are if your doctor prescribes an allergy medication to you, that medicine is likely to work. If medicine is not prescribed, it is still a good idea to ask your doctor about over-the-counter products, namely which ones work the best.

If you must rely on over-the-counter allergy medicines or if you choose to do so, you may want to do a little bit of research first. There are a number of websites online that allow internet users to rate and review products. Walgreens and DrugStore.com are just a few of the online pharmacy websites that allow the rating and reviewing of products. You are encouraged to review these ratings, as well as read any reviews that accompany them. Of course, individuals respond differently to different over-the-counter products, but you can get a good idea as to whether you should buy the allergy relief product that you wanted to buy or if you should just save your money.

In addition to speaking with a healthcare provider or using the internet to research allergy medications, it is also a good idea to speak to those that you know. You may be surprised just how many individuals there are that suffer from allergies. There is a good chance that some of your friends, family members, neighbors, or coworkers suffer from allergies. If they do, inquire as to how they treat those symptoms. If they have tried multiple prescriptions or multiple over-the-counter allergy relief medications, which ones did they like or dislike and why? Were there side effects? These are all important questions that you will want to ask.

As a recap, there are a number of prescription medications and over-the-counter products that are known for their great results. With that being said, everyone reacts different to medications, especially where side effects are concerned. For that reason, you should develop a treatment plan with a professional healthcare provider or rely on trial and error with over-the-counter products.

Where to Find Background Check Reviews

Ryan Sommers asked:

Background checks are important in every sphere of the life. Whether you are going to hire a nanny for your kids or trying to get a good doctor and good medical facilities for yourself, the background checks are essential for all to get the best for themselves and their families. Background checks are important to know about the records of the individual whom you are going to confront. This is more of a necessary thing in the case of a criminal investigation and in employment background searches. You must know that many things require a background check. It is equally true in the case of a person as well as a service.

In case of services, the background reports are required to know in detail about the registration of the companies and to know about the status of the company to be able to decide whether to join the particular company or not to. Thus, you know that getting background information is essential. However, the question remains where to get the relevant information about the sites that are capable of providing you with the best background search. For this reason, you must refer to the different types of reviews about the background searches that are available to you through the internet.

You can get the best types of background check reviews from the internet. Many websites are experts in this job and they provide the most appropriate information about the landing pages where you can get the background information that you are seeking. If you are yourself writing a review of the background check, you must keep in mind that you highlight both the advantages and disadvantages of the website that deals with the background checks. Many search engines are there which claim to provide the background searchers with the most relevant and in depth information about the persons about whom they are searching.

The web pages that deal with the background check reviews must make sure that the reviews that are posted should be relevant and that they are written in an impartial third person view. They however, should be able to attract the attention of the clients to the website pages that deal with background searches. The reviews that are obtainable at the websites that deal with the background searches must be able to mention the exact price of the background searches through that particular website. It must also be able to tell you about the details that you would get if you were accessing that website contents. Not only this, the website reviews of the backgrounders must include details about the type of background checks that the site provides. They must mention whether the websites are a paid one or if they allow free background checks.

In all, the reviews that are provided to the persons seeking a good website to do a background check must contain convincing information about the sites and information such as their security details. Therefore, if you are able to search for the perfect reviews about the search engines employed for background checks, you know what your next step will be in getting the appropriate information without wasting much of your time.

Review Male Enlargement Methods

December 5, 2008 by admin
Filed under Medical, Mobility & Disability

medical review
Paul Rodgers asked:

When it comes about the truth on penis enlargement, people think about spam email and credit card scams and fraud. It’s true that there are marketers who’d stop at nothing just to make more money and then some, but that’s probably not the case for a handful of honest companies, dedicated to helping us gain those extra inches we need!

There are only a few methods for penis enlargement. Some of them are dangerous, some of them are ineffective. So here’s the deal on penis enlargement, what works and what not.

Vacuum Pumps ? They don’t work !

Vacuum pumps work by sealing the penis in an airtight tube and removing the surrounding air. The negative pressure then pulls blood (and lymphatic fluid) into the penis and inflates it. The process takes about a minute and the results can be very impressive.

The trouble is, as soon as you remove the tube, the penis wants to revert back to its normal size. You can staunch the outflow of blood and lymphatic fluid by fitting a constriction ring around the base of your penis. This generally allows the penis to maintain its expanded girth for a few minutes, sufficient for insertion and at least one change of position before you have to pump it up again.

Because pumps draw blood into the penis and make it swell, they’re useful in the treatment of impotence (erectile dysfunction). This may create an illusion of a larger penis, but the results are seldom permanent. Repeated use can damage elastic tissues in the penis, leading to less-firm erections.

Pills, Patches, Lotions, Oils, Creams ? They don’t work !

These usually contain vitamins, minerals, herbs or hormones such as testosterone that claim to enlarge the penis. None of these products has been shown to be effective. Worst case scenario: you can suffer from an allergic reaction to vitamins or you can overdose. In both cases, call the nearest Poison Control Center, show them the bottle and be very specific on the amount of substance you have ingested or rubbed into your skin.

Surgery ? It does work, but it?s very risky !

Surgery is the preferred method for any urologist. If you’ll ever go to a medical doctor for advice, surgery is the first and the last thing you’ll hear about. Some surgeons have developed several different enlargement techniques, none of them endorsed by medical organizations. The American Urological Association, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons(ASPS) have all issued policy statements against cosmetic surgical procedures to enhance the penis.

Studies have shown that the majority of men who undergo penis enlargement surgery aren’t satisfied with the results. Surgery may at best add an average of half an inch to the length of the flaccid penis. Surgery may not add any length to the erect penis.

Following various types of cosmetic penile enhancement surgery, some men have had to undergo additional operations to correct deformities caused by the original procedure. The ill effects include scarring, a shorter penis, hair on the base of the penis, a low-hanging penis, loss of sensitivity and abnormal fat lumps. Other complaints include impotence (erectile dysfunction), urinary incontinence and persistent pain.

Then there’s the cost: as much as $10,000 for a typical penis-enlargement surgery that doesn’t require additional corrective surgery. Because cosmetic surgery is seldom covered by insurance, you’ll likely have to bear the entire expense.

Penis Exercises : They do work, but it will take quite some time to show results!

Penis exercises are a very inexpensive, safe and effective way to enlarge your penis. It is very possible that this method has been used for hundreds or thousand of years for penis enlargement, but no real research has been attempted to shed light on this subject.

Penis exercises work brilliantly and they come with the added bonus of giving you a lot more than a longer, thicker penis: you will also get to understand your body and its reactions better, which will greatly enhance your sex life.

Traction Devices and Jelqing Devices

They are a way of taking the guess work out of penis exercises! They are a lot more expensive than just an exercise program membership, but they do have better results.

Traction devices and jelqing devices are the deluxe version of penis exercises. By applying the same controlled force and pressure each time you exercises, you will get faster results. If you know you need to see something happening to motivate you to continue, than this is what you need.

And this is the whole truth about penis enlargement methods. If you were wondering about penis enlargement, what works and what’s the best way to go about it, now you know and you can make your choice easier

Male Yeast Infection Prescription Medications Review

October 22, 2008 by admin
Filed under Medical, Mobility & Disability

medical review
Rich Fuller asked:

Male yeast prescription medications may be needed if a man has an infection that is chronic or severe. It is important to take prescription medications if needed to ensure that the yeast is completely cured. Heterosexual couples who have unprotected sex can pass yeast infections back and forth.

Men get yeast infections for the same reason women do. A man can get a yeast infection the following ways:

·Sexual transmission: Candida can be transmitted between two people by direct contact. A yeast infected woman who has unprotected sex with a man can infect her partner. She could then treat and cure her infection and then get re-infected the next time she has sex with him. If you or your partner has an active infection you should be extra careful to follow the safe sex guidelines until you are sure that both of you are infection free.

·Antibiotics: Though far less common than sexual transmission, the other main cause of a penile yeast infection in males is prolonged antibiotic use.

The only way to be sure that an infection is gone is to use male yeast prescription medications. There are two prescription drugs that are commonly used to treat male yeast infections. They are:

·Diflucan (fluconazole) This is a broad spectrum drug. It will kill Candida and some other fungi. Unfortunately some people are allergic to this drug.

·Nizoral (ketaconazole) This is an extremely strong drug that should only be prescribed in extreme cases of yeast.

Some men say over the counter medications help cure their yeast infections. Some men say that applying a little bit of Monistat directly to the penis helps. And if it doesn’t start to work in a day or two just add a few drops of vinegar.

Symptoms of a penile yeast infection include:

·The most common symptom is irritation and soreness of the head of the penis.

·Some men have a discharge.

The symptoms of male yeast infection are similar to those of genital herpes. Genital herpes is a contagious viral infection affecting primarily the genitals of men and women. It is characterized by recurrent clusters of vesicles and lesions at the genital areas. It is caused by the Herpes Simplex-2 virus (HSV-2), one of several strains of the Herpes Simplex Virus responsible for chickenpox, shingles, mononucleosis, and oral herpes (fever blisters or cold sores, HSV-1). While generally not dangerous, it is a nuisance and can be emotionally traumatic, as there is no cure. Visit http://www.yeastinfectiontreatment.org to learn more about yeast infection.

It has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S.; 500,000 are diagnosed each year. One in five American adults has herpes, but only one third of those inflicted are aware that they have the virus. Many people don’t relate their symptoms to herpes, since they have either very mild or no symptoms at all. Over 50 million cases are currently estimated to exist in either the active or dormant stage.

Finding The Best Cold Sore Medication: Abreva vs. Zovirax (aciclovir)

Quinn Black asked:

The internet offers mixed reviews on many of the dozens of cold sore medications on the market today, ranging from statements like “my cold sore was gone in two hours” to “this stuff made it worse!” Some cold sore medications obviously have a better track record than others, but it can be difficult to find the perfect remedy for that annoying and embarrassing cold sore. The biggest factor that will contribute to the effectiveness of your chosen cold sore remedy is noting the stage at which the cold sore has developed when the first treatment is applied to the site. Any cold sore sufferer knows that the best way to treat a cold sore is to nip it in the bud as soon as possible. Once blisters begin to form, you may be out of luck if you are not using the right cold sore medication. I am a frequent cold sore sufferer who has tried almost every home remedy and cold sore medication on the market. In this article I am going to compare two of the most popular cold sore medications: Abreva, the only FDA approved over the counter medication and Zovirax, an FDA approved prescription medication.

Abreva:

Abreva can be purchased in almost any drug-store for $16-$20. Right off the bat, it is important to note that you won’t get much for what you pay. The medicine is in a tiny 2 gram (.07 ounce) tube that is barely an inch long. I have seen many good (and many bad) reviews of Abreva, and my opinion falls somewhere in-between. Healing a cold sore quickly with Abreva is hit-or-miss. I have learned that if I liberally apply Abreva almost every hour as soon as I feel any burning or tingling, it does help tremendously and there is 90% chance that I will avoid a full blown breakout. Often, if caught at that stage, the blisters will simply not develop. However, if I don’t have any when the tingling begins, or I wake up to find that the blisters have already begun to form, the cold sore will generally run its course, lasting 9-10 days regardless of how much I continue to apply. It really is important to apply Abreva immediately upon feeling any tingling or pain. Even an hour can make a big difference.

Zovirax (Aciclovir):

Let me just say that I absolutely love Zovirax and I regret all the years I suffered with cold sores, spending hours researching home remedies and over-the-counter products, when a simple call to the doctor for a prescription was the answer. It is truly a life-saver when it comes to cold sores. Whether it is applied at the first signs of a cold sore or even after bumps and blisters have begun to form, it will zap my cold sore in 24-48 hours. In addition, it does not “dry out” the cold sores which many medications do; shrinking the blisters, but leaving a very hard scab that cracks and bleeds. Zovirax also has something in it to relieve pain and itching. In most cases, if Zovirax is applied during the tingling stage the cold sore does not develop (like Abreva). If it is applied after blisters have formed, it shrinks the blisters overnight and relieves all the redness and irritation surrounding the sore. I have never had a cold sore for more than three days when using Zovirax. The one down-side to using this medication is the cost. A 5 gram tube of Zovirax retails at about $120.00 and is subject to a higher co-pay with insurance because there is no generic equivalent available yet.
